Why Baseline Blood Work Should Be the First Step in Any Research Journey
Whether your research focuses on body composition, healthy ageing, recovery, metabolic health or cognitive performance, one principle remains the same: you can't accurately measure change if you don't know where you started.
It's an easy step to overlook. Many people spend hours researching training methods, nutrition, supplements or research compounds, yet never establish a baseline of their own health before they begin. Weeks or months later, they may feel better—or worse—but without objective data, it's often impossible to determine whether anything has genuinely changed or whether the changes are simply perceived.
Baseline blood work provides context. Rather than relying on memory or assumptions, it gives researchers a snapshot of their current physiology before any new variable is introduced. If follow-up testing is performed later, those two points can be compared objectively, allowing meaningful observations to be made over time.
Why Baseline Testing Matters
Imagine two people begin exactly the same nutrition plan.
Both lose weight.
Both report having more energy.
On the surface, their results appear identical.
However, follow-up blood testing tells a very different story.
One individual's blood glucose regulation has improved significantly. Another has experienced improvements in cholesterol markers. A third has seen little measurable change despite similar weight loss.
Without baseline testing, none of these differences would have been identified.
Objective measurements often reveal changes that can't be seen in the mirror.
Likewise, blood work can highlight areas that deserve attention before any research even begins. Sometimes fatigue, poor recovery or reduced exercise performance may have little to do with the research being undertaken and more to do with underlying nutritional deficiencies, metabolic health or other factors that were already present.

Common Blood Tests Worth Discussing With Your Healthcare Professional
The specific tests requested will depend on your individual circumstances and the advice of your healthcare provider, but commonly requested blood work may include:
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A Complete Blood Count provides an overview of your blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It can offer valuable information about oxygen-carrying capacity, immune system activity and general health.
Kidney Function
Markers such as creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urea help assess kidney function. Healthy kidneys play an essential role in maintaining fluid balance and removing waste products from the body.
Liver Function
The liver is involved in hundreds of metabolic processes. Liver function tests commonly include enzymes such as ALT, AST, GGT and ALP, together with bilirubin levels.
Fasting Blood Glucose and HbA1c
These measurements provide insight into glucose regulation over both the short and longer term. HbA1c reflects average blood glucose levels over approximately three months and is commonly used when assessing metabolic health.
Lipid Profile
A lipid profile generally includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. These markers provide useful information regarding cardiovascular risk and overall metabolic health.
Iron Studies
Iron deficiency is more common than many people realise and may contribute to fatigue, reduced exercise capacity and impaired recovery. Iron studies often include ferritin, serum iron and transferrin saturation.
Vitamin B12, Folate and Vitamin D
These nutrients play important roles in energy production, nervous system function, bone health and immune function. Deficiencies can occur even in people who otherwise appear healthy.
Electrolytes
Sodium, potassium and other electrolytes contribute to hydration, muscle function and nerve signalling, making them useful markers for active individuals.
Blood Work Is About Information—Not Perfection
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding blood testing is the belief that every result must be "perfect."
In reality, blood work is simply information.
It helps establish where you are today.
Future testing can then identify trends over time rather than focusing on a single isolated number.
This is often far more valuable than chasing an ideal result from a single test.
Keep a Record
Blood work becomes considerably more valuable when it's viewed over months or even years.
Maintaining copies of previous results allows meaningful comparisons to be made, helping researchers identify long-term trends that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Numbers gain context when they can be compared against previous measurements.
